History

When The New Paper started its first Big Walk on June 16, 1991, it expected
only 4,500 walkers to turn up. But expectations were exceeded when over
7,000 walkers showed up.

The event has grown by leaps and bounds since then.

Guinness World Record
The New Paper Big Walk 2000 holds the official Guinness World record as The
World’s Largest Walk. Held on 21 May 2000 at the National Stadium, a record
breaking 77,500 participants joined in to mark the 10th anniversary of The
New Paper Big Walk.

The Guinness certificate means that this popular Singapore mass event ranks
among the biggest world class events such as the Boston Marathon.
Incidentally, in The Guinness Book of World Records 1998, a record 38,705
runners finished the centennial Boston race on April 15, 1996.

The New Paper Big Walk was last held in May 2006. It was suspended last year after plans were announced to demolish the National Stadium, its longtime base.

Months of search went underway to find a new home for The Big Walk, that had the capacity to accomodate tens of thousands of people, and embodied the same spirit of health and family fun.

And this year, that venue was found – The Marina Barrage.
